Summary: If you tell iChat to automatically save chat transcripts, it puts the folder "iChats" in the folder "~/Documents" rather than in the folder "~/Library/Application Support/iChat". There seems to be no way to change this behavior. According to the document http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conceptual/BPFileSystem/Articles/WhereToPutFiles.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40001411-111946, applications "should never install files into a user’s Documents directory or into the /Users/Shared directory. These directories should only be modified by the user." Steps to Reproduce: (1) Open iChat. (2) In Preferences, Messages, select "Automatically save chat transcripts". Expected Results: The transcripts are saved in "~/Library/Application Support/iChat". Actual Results: The transcripts are saved in "~/Documents". Regression: No regression testing done. This was probably a problem with previous version of iChat too. 21-Jan-2008 08:41 PM Jeff Johnson: This issue has not been fully addressed in Leopard. Steps to reproduce: (1) Launch iChat. (2) Open the iChat Preferences. (3) Select the Messages pane in Preferences. Expected results: No new files are created on disk. Actual results: The folder "iChats" is created in the "~/Documents" folder. This occurs even when "Automatically save chat transcripts to" was unselected.
